Introductory Message from Katarina Thorsen

In my role as art director at @bypoststreet, and as therapeutic art facilitator in the Lower Mainland, I am fulfilling my passion to awaken creative expression in everyone around me.  I do this through visual art, art facilitation, art events, street art, blogging, journaling and craftivism.  Especially sock monkeys.

Sock monkeys are a significant part of my work.  Perhaps my life’s work!

I have been delivering sock monkey therapy and…

Springtime Delights

Yesterday was one of those quintessential Springtime Delights. After spending a great portion of the morning completing yardwork, I took the camera for a walk to find those glimpses of Spring that are just now showing themselves.

Spring is here.

We were at 70 degrees, a first day many were sporting shorts outside. The red buds are out, the hosta points are up pointing toward the sky. Trees are beginning to bloom and there’s a bird chorus that is a new.

Think Spring

Snow is in the forecast for the coming days. No sign of it really that I care to recognize, just the neighbor’s tip-off which attempted to curtail the collage work I was completing outside. My only response was, that can’t happen, not for a couple hours at least.

He gave me two days. Two days before Old Man Winter comes back for a visit.  It will be short I assume, just a reminder that he is still around. A blackberry winter of sorts, with the brief cold snap after the Spring has sprung making the berries juicier. I will happily greet the snow. Just for a bit, then he must go.

Do You Know: Shannon Grissom?

Below is one of my art journal pages from this past week.
I am dedicating the page out to the inspiring Shannon Grissom.

Spread Your Wings Jolie Buchanan Journal Page

I could tell you that Shannon is a painter; I could tell you that Shannon is a musician; I could tell you that Shannon is a photographer, an author, a television producer, a woman full of gratitude and inspiration, and a multi-talented multipreneur creative based in Hollister, California – but it’s probably best just to let Shannon tell you her own story which you can find on her website:

I’m kind of a late bloomer. I didn’t discover painting until I was 33! But I was hooked. Inspired and driven, I’d get up early each day to paint for a few hours before the start of my workday. This demanding schedule was worth the effort. By 1999, I was able to leave my day job, and began to do my art as a full-time business. And thus began the amazing ride…

At 44 I began production of the television series, Give Your Walls Some Soul. It grew from an audience of one station to over 50 stations across the country and over 10 million households, winning numerous awards. At 46 I published my children’s book Monkey Made of Sockies. From that book came a line of licensed merchandise, the popular Monkey Made of Sockies golf club headcovers that have become a world-wide hit.

Today I’m an award-winning artist, television producer/host and author. My artwork is licensed and sold globally, and I have recently come full circle with the release of my second music CD, Virtually Possible, with songwriter Jason Shepherd. I see art, music, writing, and multimedia as movements in my own unfinished symphony, and I always did like to paint big. A child once told me that I have The Power of all Giggles! Her kind words made me smile from the inside out! It is my hope that through my creative work, I can share my smiles with you. I maintain a studio in Hollister, CA and welcome visitors by appointment.

Thanks Shannon for the inspiration you share with the world!

Bottom of a Waterway Christy Birmingham and Jolie Buchanan

Excited to have back again the wonderful word-smither Christy Birmingham to Spaces to Create!

Bottom of the Waterway by Jolie Buchanan collab with Christy Birmingham

My mind goes to the river,
Only seconds before my toes follow, and
My thoughts rush over debris that sits at the
Bottom of a waterway full of tears.

My flesh is eaten by the liquid smoothness of
A river and of a light, with a newfound joy that
Resonates within my bones.

As I reach forward with my hands, I scoop up
The weeds that peak through the water,
The softness of my palms meeting them for
A thoughtful exchange of what to enjoy tomorrow.

Indeed, there is more to be had.

And, in turn, through our meeting of
Weeds, water and whimsy,
I tell myself that it is okay to start at the bottom
Again.

Happy Rhythm Collaboration Christy Birmingham and Jolie Buchanan

Take me away to a place that hums with
The same confidence that streams through me, running
From my toes to my wavy hair. I am searching,
And the track is one that has a finish line, I know, yet
I am not close enough to see it.

Take care you, for you are on the same journey,
Only you are a few paces behind me and your mascara is
Streaming down your cheeks.
Take the time to reset and replay the song that moves
Your bones in a happy rhythm.

I will find that place to call home soon – I think the
Chimney there is full of calm and my feet are full of
The warmth I desire when I open that front door.
How is it that the sun is shining and
No one around me understands the questions I am asking?
I will get there soon, and so will your wet cheeks.

Cheers To Creating!
