Tree Branches at My Ribs

Poetry and Mixed Media Collaboration

Christy Birmingham and Jolie Buchanan

Tree Branches At My Ribs
Poking at my ribs,
Your fingers were hard as tree branches –
And your mind wasn’t any softer.

You told me to do more, see more,
And my heart fell into itself when you
Said the words feel more.

You played the song of doubt with
Too many choruses, and I forced myself to
Sway along with every oppressive note.

But,
Those were the melodies and I was the girl
Who feared she had no branches of her own,

Who wanted only to build roots with you and
Grow, in a field that I didn’t realize was
Cluttered already with foreign bosoms.

I needed my own sunlight, I see that now, and
You poked a bit too much at the body of
This woman who wants to keep dreaming for more.

Bottom of the Waterway by Jolie Buchanan collab with Christy Birmingham

My mind goes to the river,
Only seconds before my toes follow, and
My thoughts rush over debris that sits at the
Bottom of a waterway full of tears.

My flesh is eaten by the liquid smoothness of
A river and of a light, with a newfound joy that
Resonates within my bones.

As I reach forward with my hands, I scoop up
The weeds that peak through the water,
The softness of my palms meeting them for
A thoughtful exchange of what to enjoy tomorrow.

Indeed, there is more to be had.

And, in turn, through our meeting of
Weeds, water and whimsy,
I tell myself that it is okay to start at the bottom
Again.

Happy Rhythm Collaboration Christy Birmingham and Jolie Buchanan

Take me away to a place that hums with
The same confidence that streams through me, running
From my toes to my wavy hair. I am searching,
And the track is one that has a finish line, I know, yet
I am not close enough to see it.

Take care you, for you are on the same journey,
Only you are a few paces behind me and your mascara is
Streaming down your cheeks.
Take the time to reset and replay the song that moves
Your bones in a happy rhythm.

I will find that place to call home soon – I think the
Chimney there is full of calm and my feet are full of
The warmth I desire when I open that front door.
How is it that the sun is shining and
No one around me understands the questions I am asking?
I will get there soon, and so will your wet cheeks.

Cheers To Creating!

Collaborative Creative Collections Time

I knew, right when I glanced into the mailbox, that it was full of fun!

The Gluebook Goodness segment of the 6 Degrees of Creativity 2 workshops brought more than anticipated.  Loads of paper, tons of ideas, and great excitement for what is to come.

Stay tuned as the collaborative collections begin to grow.

Let The Creating Begin!

Let The Paper Swapping Begin!

The last few days have been spent with handfuls of paper clippings, painting remnants & handmade paper swatches I’ve been collecting in an empty tissue box beginning a month or so ago.

My treasury box began while preparing for the paper swap in Gluebook Goodness, a segment of the 6 Degrees of Creativity 2 set of workshops.

It has been a great time of both reflection on my past work and general discovery. Revisiting remnants of my past work and holding clipping parties for additional content has helped foster a strong sense of creativity and community.

The above photographs are from my gathering and a few favorite bits I captured before shipping them away to my swap partner. Looking forward to see what the swap my bring and inspire over the coming months.
